CHAKRAS AND THE TREE OF LIFE
Part 11 - THE BROW CHAKRA
SIXTH: BROW CHAKRA - SANSKRIT NAME - AJNA Meaning - To know, to perceive Location - slightly above and between the eyebrows Systems & Body Parts - left and right cerebral hemispheres, mind function, eyes, ears, nose, neurological system Glands - pituitary & pineal Musical Keynote - A, Gemstone - lapis lazuli, Element - light Sense - intuition, Seed Sound - Om, Verb - I see, Color - indigo Main Function - seat of wisdom, center of inner knowing This chakra, slightly above and between the eyebrows, is often called the third eye. It is the center of psychic ability and intuition, which is used to see through illusion to the universal knowledge that lies beyond. It is the seat of our mental capacity, our ability to perceive, to evaluate, to think. The brow chakra powers our intellect, which includes rational, emotional and spiritual intelligence. This level is associated with light, which is produced by finer vibrations - higher frequencies than those that produce sound. There is some controversy regarding whether the pineal and pituitary glands are associated with the brow or crown chakra. Some say the pituitary corresponds to the brow and the pineal to the crown. Others say it is the opposite. Some say that both glands correspond to the brow chakra. Both of these glands are of utmost importance to the functioning of the body. The pituitary is said to be the 'mother' of all glands, releasing hormones that inform all the other glands. The pineal gland has long been a mystery to modern science. Many mystics and some philosophers such as Rene Descartes have referred to it as the seat of the soul and many 'mind-expanding' methods involve some sort of stimulation of this gland. It is interesting that embryos are said to have something on the forehead that looks like a third eye. This 'growth' eventually becomes the pineal gland. - Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Aspects/Issues: An individual who is balanced at this level is open-minded and levelheaded, with clear and focused thought processes. Such a person recognizes that there is more to life than meets the eye and tends not to see things as either black or white. Such a person has a confident, objective way of dealing with information, including a strong faith in any perceptions that are gathered intuitively. From this powerful psychic center, one is able to discern a greater degree of the 'truth' and ascend towards spiritual liberation. The challenge in this center is to recognize the illusions that threaten one's sense of self worth. Imbalance at this level often involves a fear of truth, of becoming more conscious, of change, and of the discipline required for change. The challenge is to develop one's intuitive powers, to avoid clinging to belief systems, to be receptive to the new information that often accompanies change. Such efforts lead to clear insight into one's fears so that such fears will no longer have authority over one's actions and attitudes. When we are able to do this, we can visualize our direction in life and with confidence make manifest our aspirations. The wisdom that is gained from such clarity of mind is one of the divine powers of the sixth chakra. - Physical Functions of the Brow Chakra: This center governs the functioning of the brain and nervous system, the eyes, ears and nose and the important pituitary and pineal glands. - Physical Malfunctioning: Blockage at this level could lead to learning difficulties, brain tumors, stroke, blindness, deafness, insomnia, seizures, neurological disorders and spinal difficulties.
