GREETINGS DEAR FRIENDS
This newsletter features the second in a series of articles on The Physics of Mysticism, exploring the parallels between what the ancient mystics and modern scientists are telling us about the nature of our universe. This segment looks at the illusions of space and time.
We are very excited about our upcoming Toronto concert - the bebut performance by the Bhadra Collective, with special guests Gary Diggins and Prince Bamidele Bajowa.
This newsletter is also announcing that my lovely wife, Enza, is now offering Yoga classes here in Guelph, Ontario.
If you'd like to access past newsletters containing the ongoing articles on Magic, the Power of Mantra and other topics, please visit the 'newsletter' page of my website, whyislife.com Peace and love, Dennis |

THE PHYSICS OF MYSTICISM (Part 2)
- Space and Time -
" For us believing physicists, the distinction between past, present and future is only an illusion, even if a stubborn one."
- Albert Einstein The two perspectives of science and mysticism have
much in common with their thoughts on the concepts of space and time. According
to the old mechanistic view, space was an empty region that existed
independently of any objects contained within it. Time was thought of as a
separate dimension, flowing evenly and consistently, completely detached from
matter. But more recently, Relativity theory has suggested otherwise. At speeds
approaching the speed of light, the inconsistent and elastic nature of time has
been proven on countless occasions. Time has been shown to be integrally
connected to space and to matter. This view is also held by the eastern
mystics, who consider perceptions of time and space to be relative to different
levels of consciousness. D. T. Suzuki, speaking on the Avatamsaka philosophy of
Buddhism, says, "There is no space without time, no time without space."
The elasticity of space at high velocities has also been
demonstrated many times. At low speeds, a particle has a shape that is
spherical. At very high speeds it shortens along the length of the direction in
which it is moving. This flattens the spherical particle into a pancake shape.
Which of these two shapes is the true reality? Capra points out that this is
like asking which length of a shadow, which changes with the angle of the sun,
is the real one. A shadow is the projection of three-dimensional points onto a
two-dimensional plane, and so the length changes with the angle of projection.
Similarly, the length or shape of a moving object is a projection of points in
four-dimensional space-time onto a three-dimensional space. It changes
according to the speed at which it is moving.
General
relativity suggests that gravity is the bending or warping of the fabric of
space-time. The structure of this fabric correlates to the distribution of
matter within the fabric. Space is warped to accommodate large bodies of matter, and so
is time. Time flows at different rates at different locations in the universe.
The reports of countless mystics also allude to the inconsistent elasticity of
time and space. Their experience of it while in altered states of consciousness
is very different, allowing mystics to 'travel' in space and time. While such
travels are often dismissed as 'imaginary', there are many reports of the
effects of such travels manifesting in our physical reality. Information has
been brought back from different time travels, for example, which later prove
to be true. Events that have occurred in our physical reality have been
witnessed 'elsewhere' and at different times.
All
events are somehow interconnected, yet without the definition of time as being
a consistently linear unfolding of events, our notions of cause and effect
become increasingly meaningless. On the other side of the time illusion, there
is no before and after, no cause and effect. The philosophical consequences of
the experiments of modern physics are in agreement with mystical experience.
In the next newsletter, part 3 of The Physics of Mysticism will deal with 'Constant Movement, Constant Change'. |

A DAY OF SACRED SOUND
A workshop with Dennis Gaumond Sunday, September 21, from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm Location: Gary Diggins' Studio, 219 St. Clair W., Toronto, Ontario (For a map, click the link below) MAP The ancients understood that sound has the power to heal and transform. Today more and more people are discovering that the use of sound is a joyful way to affect health, stress levels and mental attitudes. This workshop provides an opportunity for participants to both learn about and experience the transformational power of sound. It will be divided into 2 segments: DIVINE ENERGY AND THE BIG SHIFT: 10:00 AM TO 12:30 PM The morning segment will help us to understand why sound has this power. We will learn to see reality in a new way, understanding it in terms of energy and vibration. From this new perspective, many things will start to make more sense, including the healing process and the power of sound. We will begin to see ourselves as electro-magnetic beings whose actions emit a negative or positive charge. We will also get a better understanding of the great changes that are affecting the planet and its inhabitants at this time - a phenomenon sometimes called the Big Shift. SACRED SOUND WORKSHOP: 1:30 PM TO 5:30 PM. Spend the afternoon in a beautiful environment, enveloped in Sacred Sound. Learn to use your voice to affect your health, stress levels and mental attitudes. Enjoy this introduction to the ancient art of overtone singing. The soothing tones of the crystal bowls will massage your spirit and carry you into a meditative trance. Simple drumming exercises are relaxing and fun and can help to entrain us to the natural rhythms of the Earth. (drums will be provided or bring your own) Learn about the power of mantra and chanting from a variety of cultural traditions. We will create a frequency of love, peace and gratitude to heal ourselves and to send out to the Universe.
*No previous musical experience is required. Even if you don't consider yourself a singer or musician you will be delighted at your ability to join with others to create powerful sound through toning and chanting.
Cost: Morning segment - $30 Afternoon segment - $60 Both segments - $75 (bring a lunch) (these prices include GST)
