LEARNING TO BE A SHAMAN (Part 3) - Conquering Choronzon -
by Dennis Gaumond
The demon known as
Choronzon appears in the writings of many magicians, such as Aleister Crowley,
John Dee and Edward Kelly. It is sometimes associated with Satan or the
serpent. Pop culture has given it many colorful personifications, images and
descriptions, but the notion of such a demon is much more ancient and much less
physically tangible. Many mystical and shamanic traditions speak of a horrific
entity that one encounters when journeying into non-ordinary states of reality.
This entity has been given many names, some of the more common ones are 'the
Dweller in the Abyss', 'the Guardian of the Threshold' and the demon,
'Choronzon'. This entity is said to be the greatest obstacle to reaching
enlightenment.
One of the mystical aspects
of the Qabalic traditions, for example, involves a 'journey' up Jacob's Ladder
through the seven heavens in a 'cosmic vehicle' called the 'merkaba'. It allows
the initiate to travel 'astrally' through the seven levels, the sephiroth, to
arrive at seventh heaven and glimpse the throne of God. Along the way the
initiate often encounters a 'place' or a state of being often referred to as
'the Abyss'.
In other words, progress
into an enlightened state of being is sometimes thwarted by a condition that
has been referred to as the 'dark night of the soul'. This passage, often
marked by confusion and spiritual crisis, is successful only if the individual
overcomes all fears and sees through all illusions.
This abyss is ruled by
Choronzon, the demon of chaos, destroyer of ego - considered to be an aspect of
the entity known as Thoth/Hermes/Enoch. The demon can take on any form, and
usually takes on an identity that is representative of the individual's fears
and issues. In order to pass through the abyss one must let go of all ego or,
in other words, one must confront this fearsome demon and recognize it as an
illusion, the manifestation of one's own fear. The greatest obstacle to
enlightenment is fear, in all its many manifestations.
Someone who seeks a faster
path, such as that of the dark magician or by the ingesting of psychotropic
drugs without the proper preparation, risks the danger of an unsuccessful and
thus horrifying encounter with Choronzon. The shamanic path toward
enlightenment and true power is just like any other path - it requires a
systematic and incremental overcoming of fears until one is capable of existing
in a sustained state of grace, love and compassion.
Stay tuned -
the next newsletter will take us further in our exploration of shamanism.
